A/Prof Prof Soong Tuck Wah with the Neurobiology Programme has published a paper in the journal Molecular Pharmacology entitled “Activation of corticotropin releasing factor receptor 1 selectively inhibits CaV3.2 T type calcium channels.”

Grant Award from Gates Foundation

Dr Tong Yen Wah, Assistant Professor with the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Division of Bioengineering has received a US$100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

The grant will support his innovative global health research project, entitled “Molecularly imprinted polymeric nanoparticles to capture viruses in treating infectious diseases – A synthetic antibody”. [READ MORE]

The Roundtable Discussion on Genomics and Population Health was held from 17 to 20 October 2008 at the Vista, University Hall, NUS.

It was organised by the Life Sciences Institute Centre for Molecular Epidemiology (CME), National University of Singapore, Scripps Genomic Medicine Program, San Diego, California, USA and Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Research Unit, University of Otago, New Zealand. [READ MORE]

Life Sciences Institute hosted a visit for the Polish Media on 16 October 2008. They were: Ms Joanna Zimakowska (Editor,  Swiat Nauki), Mr Andrzej Gorzym (Science Section, Polityka) and Ms Dorota Romanowska (Science Section, Newsweek Polska).

A/Prof Ong Wei Yi led the delegates for a tour of the Neurobiology Labs, followed by lunch hosted by LSI Deputy Director, A/Prof Low Boon Chuan.

Cancer RCE Official Opening

The Cancer Research Centre of Excellence (RCE) was officially opened on Wednesday 15 October 2008 by the Guest-of-Honour Mrs Tan Ching Yee, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education.

The Cancer RCE aims to take an integrated approach in studying cancers which are endemic to Asian population, such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer and leukaemia. It will fast-track cancer research transforming basic science into treatments for patients. [READ MORE]

An LSI Young Investigator Seminar was held on 16 October 2008 at the CeLS Auditorium. The speaker was A/Prof Markus Wenk (LSI Neurobiology/Ageing Programme and Assistant Head of Department of Biochemistry, NUS). He delivered a talk on “Lipidomics, Novel Tools and Applications”.

The month of October 2008 saw four lectures being held at the CeLS Auditorium.

On 17 October, Dr John D Potter (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, School of Public Health & Community Medicine, USA) delivered a lecture on “Beyond Bench to Bedside”.

Professor John P.A. Ioannidis (Department of Hygiene and Epidemiology, University of Ioannina School of Medicine, Greece) spoke on “Integrating Genomics into Population Health: Promises and Pitfalls” on 20 October. Both lectures above were hosted by Professor Chia Kee Seng (LSI Molecular Epidemiology Programme Leader; Director, NUS-GIS Centre for Molecular Epidemiology and Professor, Dept of Community, Occupational and Family Medicine, NUS).

Professor Benny Geiger (Professor & Dean, Faculty of Biology, Department of Molecular Cell Biology Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel) gave a lecture titled “Environmental Signaling Via the Integrin Adhesome”. The lecture, held on 22 October, was hosted by Prof Michael Sheetz (Head, Mechanobiology Research Group & Distinguished Visiting Professor, Dept of Biological Sciences, NUS)

Another lecture titled “Neurotechnology and Epilepsy” was delivered by Professor Steven Craig Schachter (Harvard Medical School) on 23 October. Prof Ong Choon Nam (Director, Life Sciences Institute) hosted the lecture.
