OLS Exco and SICS Clinicians at Neurobiology Lab

The programme started with an informal dialogue with the OLS Executive Committee (Exco). This was followed by a tour of the Neurobiology labs. OLS ExCo also visited the labs in Brenner Centre. The day’s programme ended with a tea reception at the CeLS foyer which was attended by OLS Exco, Programme Leaders and Principal Investigators.

NRF Fellowships & Grant Calls

National Research Foundation(NRF) Fellowship Scheme

OLS has been actively promoting the National Research Foundation Fellowship scheme both locally and internationally to seek out outstanding young scientists to do independent research in NUS. The NRF Fellowship aims to support talented postdoctoral fellows who are 35 years of age and below. It is opened to all nationalities and in all areas of science and technology. The successful applicants will be offered a generous start up grant of USD $1.5 million over 3 years at a university in Singapore. Outstanding Fellows may be offered tenured track or permanent positions at the appropriate academic departments in NUS.

A list of NRF Fellowship applicants in the area of life sciences has been circulated to all OLS Programme Leaders, relevant Vice Deans (Research) and Departmental Heads for shortlisting. OLS has also setup aninternal ad-hoc committee comprising Vice Deans (Research) and representatives from the Dentistry,Computing, Engineering, Medicine and Science to review the applicants. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview at NUS in June 2007. They will also be given the opportunity to interact withrelevant staff from the various OLS Programmes and departments and to give a seminar during their visit.

Please disseminate this information to suitable candidates. More information on the scheme and forms canbe obtained from the ORE Website.

Safety at CeLS

Fire Drill

A fire drill at CeLS was jointly conducted with SICS on 24 May 2007 and we are happy to note that there was 100% participation. We have noted that there were some hitches which will be rectified immediately. OLS is committed to safety in the CeLS building and we hope all CeLS occupants and users will participate in our efforts by giving us your feedback. Do not hesitate to contact Dr Viji Vijayan/Ms Poon Yoke Yin if you have any safety concerns and watch out for more safety news here in the future.

BMRC & NMRC Grant Calls

BMRC

The BMRC-NMRC joint call will close on 4 June 2007 and OLS is working closely with six Faculties/Schools(Medicine, Dentistry, Science, Engineering, Computing and Arts & Social Sciences), to coordinate the submission of the applications from NUS. OLS has also conducted internal reviews of several draft proposals submitted by Principal Investigators to help further improve their proposals. More information onthe grant call can be obtained from here.

NMRC

NMRC has announced the launch of the second grant call for the Translational and Clinical Research (TCR) Flagship Programme and Singapore Translational Research (STaR) InvestigatorshipAwards under the BMS initiative Phase II. Open to local public institutions in Singapore, this programmeseeks to integrate, coordinate and leverage on the full spectrum of research capabilities in Singapore frombasic science to clinical research in an “all-the-way” fashion. The proposed programme should draw on the best strengths from institutions across Singapore with the relevant expertise that will enhance the competitiveness of the programme.

For application to NMRC, the application forms can be downloaded from NMRC website.
